Accelerating the Adoption of HPC Big Memory Uses Cases in the Cloud


It wasn’t that long ago when we discussed “if” HPC solutions could be offered and hosted in the cloud. The answer was yes! We now ask “what type” of solutions can be offered in the cloud. Today’s high performance industry standard servers with fast networking, large storage arrays, and now large memory footprints enable a wide range of HPC solution available in the cloud, and decisions of on-prem or cloud are based on the desired “consumption” model for HPC solutions. Accelerating the adoption of HPC Big Memory Use Cases in the Cloud focuses on how industry leaders, Intel, MemVerge, Penguin Computer and WWT are enabling high performance analytical solutions in the cloud. We’ll describe how Intel Optane Persistent Memory, and the MemVerge Memory machine are being utilized by Penguin Computing and offered as complete solutions by WWT to revolutionize the way high performance computing solutions are made available to the masses via the cloud.

Kevin Tubbs, Senior Vice President, Strategic Solutions Group, Penguin Computing

Kevin has over fifteen years of High-Performance Computing (HPC) experience in various areas, ranging from software development and application performance optimization to hardware and systems-level deployment and management. Kevin has ten years of experience in GPGPU and accelerator programming and heterogeneous computing solution design. Kevin also has expertise in computational fluid dynamics, computational science, numerical modeling and engineering simulation focused on HPC, AI, and heterogeneous computing implementations. Prior to joining Penguin Computing, Kevin serviced as an HPC consultant and performance engineer for a variety of organizations including Dell, Inc., High-Performance Technologies, Inc., the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and the Center for Computation and Technology (CCT) at Louisiana State University (LSU). His clients and customers have included, multiple fortune 500 companies, research universities, and government organizations. Kevin’s current focus is providing end-to-end technology solutions.

Earl Dodd, HPC & HPDA Architect, Alchemist & Business Practice Leader, WWT

Earl J. Dodd is World Wide Technology’s Global HPC Business Practice Leader for HPC. I provide HPC/HPDA/Supercomputing strategy, technology enablement, business development, and marketing and sales support to WWT’s global enterprises and governments. I help achieve a customer’s desired ROI by leveraging HPC technology, extreme data in motion, and the Cloud on secure ultra-scale architectures and collaboration environments. This effort drives the next generation of computationally steered workflows in decision support environments for real-time situational awareness and institutional learning.

Charles Fan, CEO, MemVerge

Charles Fan is co-founder and CEO of MemVerge. Prior to MemVerge, Charles was the CTO of Cheetah Mobile leading its global technology teams, and an SVP/GM at VMware, founding the storage business unit that developed the Virtual SAN product. Charles also worked at EMC and was the founder of the EMC China R&D Center. Charles joined EMC via the acquisition of Rainfinity, where he was a co-founder and CTO. Charles received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, and his B.E. in Electrical Engineering from the Cooper Union.
